There's sausages? Elections in my country don't have sausages! *is jealous*

any and all events that cause a gathering of people in australia will inevitably involve a sausage sizzle. people may talk a lot about meat pies and prawns on the barbie, but it is the humble sausage that brings us all together.

Non-Australian question: can you tell us more about the sausage in question? What sort of thing are we talking about? Because when I hear that, I think of breakfast sausages, but I don't think that can be right. Is it the kind of sausages that one might eat on a bun or a roll? Or what? Any information is appreciated. Inquiring minds want to know.

Here is a pic of the sausage sandwich you get at a sausage sizzle: http://desperatelyseekingcrab.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/img_3259edit.jpg Sometimes you also get the option of bbq sauce, or different types of sausages if it's particularly fancy/progressive. The fried onion is not compulsory but is delicious. Such a delectable sausage meal will usually put you back between $1-3, which is actually really cheap. Oh, and sausage sizzles are usually fundraising stalls so you can feel good about buying one.

And here is a site dedicated to listing all the election day sausage sizzles, to prove I'm not falsely romanticising this noble tradition :) http://www.electionsausagesizzle.com.au/

bwahahaha (I am juvenile)

Seriously, though, why doesn't everywhere have sausage stands near voting booths, it's a genius idea

i salute this wonderful australian innovation

There are frequently gourmet food trucks hanging out a block or so from my neighborhood courthouse. Very nice if you've got jury duty. (US)

Oh man oh man the one I went to had falafel rolls. If I hadn't been exhausted and footsore and just wanted to go home (I was handing out HTVs with the Greens), I totally would have got one. Veg folk represent :D

(The cake stall, alas, was a total bust. EVERYTHING had eggs, dairy, or friggin' marshmallows...)
