A lot of the more recent Newberys have happy endings. Holes, The One and Only Ivan, and Criss Cross all come to mind.

But it does seem to be the depressing ones that get more attention in schools. I cannot imagine why anyone thought Out of the Dust was an awesome book to give to children.

Not a Newberry, but for depressing books, Z for Zachariah. Holy FUCK seventh grade English teacher this shit is not suitable for twelve-year-olds.

My most memorable one was Summer of My German Soldier Fantastic surprise ending for a preteen, thanks Mrs. Dawson.

Bridge to Terabithia is also a terrible book to give to elementary kids.
