People come to stories through Bowdlerised, abridged, or otherwise softened versions all the time. Disney movies, Lambs Tales from Shakespeare, extracts used in readers for English class, Wishbone - her sister was doing the same thing.

It might be an odd way of experiencing Gatsby, but there's no one right way of coming to a work of literature, and her sister evidently knew OP well enough to know what parts would bring her lasting enjoyment and where to go off book.

I'm sticking with 'sweet'.
