The great internet robbery of 2012

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
The great internet robbery of 2012 and the big question on everyone's mind:

What did Anita Sarkeesian do with the money?

Let's hear your theories.

As for me, I think she Scrooge McDuck'd it. Broke it down as small as it would go, dumped it in a giant tower and went swimming.

I think she's just using it poorly. Some of it is probably going into hosting the Feminist Frequency website and, you know, feeding her and paying her rent while she makes videos.

Seriously, she never fucking asked for that much and I doubt she'd know what to do with it without help. Her mistake is thinking she didn't need help.

I'm not sure the videos are even worth the original $6000, tho, tbh.

if she went and bough a licensed copy of proprietary video editing software and a good camera, a steady tripod, and some lights, and didn't shop around or bought used or checked for alternatives at all i can see her reaching that amount of money, even faster if she is included web hosting for the amount of time she spent "researching" and filming and if she is including salary for whomever is helping her

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
But given the no change in quality at all with the videos, I take it she didn't.

AYRT

Agreed... but, and I say this as a person with little knowledge of video stuff, the quality doesn't seem to have improved.

And one of the tings she said she needed the money for was to actually buy and play the games... which it seems like she didn't.

I mean, her content aside (and I do have some issues with her content) I can't help but feel like she could have, and has done the exact same stuff for free.

I mean, I'd like $6000 to put my opinions online, but I don't /need/ that much money do to it.

Not my money. So, I don't care.

People who were donating to her got what they deserve. They just wanted a person to dictate in simplified talking points that did not make them think but confirmed everything they already believed in. Even if it was false. That's what Sarkeesian did. She asked for money to make more of the same videos. They gave her money. She did exactly that. More of the same. No better quality. No new insights. No deeper investigations. Just more of the same. That's what she promised. That's what she delivered. Like I said, they got what they paid for.

Not exactly

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-09-07 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
she did promise better quality. And that she'd play the games. Obviously it's not like she can be made to give the money back but even those who paid her can be dissapointed that the paltry, paltry things she promised to do on 6,000 were not delivered upon.

Re: Not exactly

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh. I think I am biased. I looked at her and I could smell con coming off of her in waves.

It's a shame people had to learn the hard way though.

Sad but true. I'd would have at least hoped that she would have spent a little money to get some stuff to record herself playing the games instead of stealing clips off youtube but what do I know.

Even if her videos are awful, they make the insanely sexist guys on 4chan so deliciously butthurt. And that's fun

I've honestly found more insanely sexist guys on normal gaming forums than on 4chan.

If you want the depths of mouthbreathing waifuism you need to visit the Bioware forums.

IDK, POL is pretty bad. There's a ton of "Women are locks, guys are keys. A lock that opens for any key is worthless, hurhur" type of guys there.
insanenoodlyguy: (Default)

Holy shit don't go to /pol/

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-09-07 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You never go to pol! That's the shadowlands of 4chan. Mufasa told your dumb ass not to go there, young cub.

/pol/ is the 4chan that the rest of the internet believes 4chan is.

The rest of the forums are substantially better.

Wouldn't it have been better to do that with say, a competant video artist? Seems like spending 100k to get us butthurt could have been better spent by, say, showing up on /v/ and posting feminist positive video game picture threads.

Or how about creative a video game in which she would approve of. It won't be Assassin's Creed quality but it will be a start. And if it sells well, it will show gaming companies the potential market out there.

I like to think shes off on some tropical beach drinking fruity drinks with 4chan.

either anita or 4chan will be surprised to find out which of the drinks actually contains the poison, though

Internet robbery? She asked for money and people gave it to her. Honestly, seeing the rage she inspires in certain internet dudezones, I wish I had given her money even though I have never seen one of her videos and never will.

Re: The great internet robbery of 2012

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
She asked for money, to improve her video quality and to be able to play the games, and according to what I've seen so far there has been NO improvement from her free videos.

She got more than she needed and provided less than she promised.
Not technically robbery, I admit. Maybe a bit fraud-y. if not legally, at least ethically.

As for the robbery there's the matter of the "Using lets play footage and passing it off as her own" thing.

This seems like an useless dead-horse to beat. Whatever you think of the resulting videos, they at least exist.

The Arkh project, on the other hand...

I am unaware of the arkh project. Do please continue.

It was supposed to be a video game whose main characters were queer people of color--a reaction to mainstream games where queer characters and characters of color are sidelined. The would-be creator, Riley--who went by the names of gisei_nashi_ni and smallblackangel on LJ--had a kickstarter page to raise funds for the project. It was very clear, early on, that Riley had no actual experience in creating a video game, and none of the people Riley brought on-board had much more than Riley did, and shockingly, only a handful of Riley's SJW friends ponied up. AFAIK, all that came out of it was some fairly hideous art and the beginnings of a wretched webcomic.
