The n-word (wow I feel weird even typing it, and I curse like a sailor, but I never say that one) is definitely one of the most offensive terms in the USA - IF you're not a black person talking to another black person. I've heard it spoken aloud many times, but always in that context. (I have seen it in writing, sometimes quoting somebody, as a slur, and it's horribly offensive - I remember some comments made by some very rural, very out-of-touch, very conservative people when Obama was running for president that made me ashamed of people...) I just stay the hell away from it, myself. I've never heard of it being used in other places, since I thought it originated here. Do people use it in other countries, that you know of?

ayrt

Well I'm in Australia and all my knowledge of it as A Bad Word comes from the tv/internet. But I don't think using it is common here, hell we have (had? I think it fell down) a place called Nigger (named after a ?football? dude) and cheese called Coon (can still be used as an insult but I've never heard it as such).

If I wanted to insult a black person with a racist slur (instead of the usual fuckhead/asshole or whatever, so very unlikely considering my own mixed background) I would call them an Abo/abco, golliwog (the toy is ok but calling someone it is not) *thinks hard* yeah okay I don't know what slur you would hypothetically use for someone who's black, but not Aboriginal. Boatie maybe? Boong? But that's still Aboriginal focussed. Wogs I've heard used for anyone who is not obviously caucasian?

I've lightly used bogan, sheepfucker and bushpig which I guess are more ?slurs? for rural people and the kiwi's.

But yeah, screaming abuse at someone if I did want to get racially insulting Nigger is not on the top of the list because I'm unfamiliar with it outside of the internet. It'd be like calling someone a tosser or gypsie or whatever, I only know it's insulting thanks to the internet but not in my actual area

*SA
Would Pom be a slur? It's used to refer to people from the UK - although generally in a fond manner.

So hard to work out a slur when the casual language is littered with fond insults. I guess a person's attitude would really matter

Wow. I have literally never heard of any of those other ones except "coon" and "gypsy"
