If this is from the series I think it is, then me too ): I always hated that she got married, and young!me took Anne staying unmarried so long as proof that she was waiting for Diana to come to her senses and say 'fuck this shit' and come have a boston marriage with Anne.

I liked the Anne/Gilbert relationship in the later books, but the way their relationship developed felt very forced and fake to me, like they both only got together because Gilbert felt like he owed her for breaking her self-esteem and Anne felt like she owed him for giving up a job for her.

Who are they, please?

Anne and Diana from the Anne of Green Gables series. The pic is from the television adaptation.

I wasn't the anon who asked, but thanks!

It's Anne Shirley and Diana Barry from the '80s TV adaptation of L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series of books. The redhead on the left is Anne, plated by Megan Follows. The brunette on the right is Diana Barry played by Schuyler Grant.

In that case I probably overkilled other!anon with information. I just presumed it was you cause it was so polite.

Aw! I'm glad you did, because I had no idea what this secret was about and you saved me several trips to Google.

Awww. I do find how Anne and Diana grow apart (even though they still love each other so much) heartbreaking. Sweet as Gilbert is, Anne and Diana's love is the OTP of the early books.

(Though if I'm perfectly honest, I was a weirdo who grew up devotedly shipping Marilla/Rachel.)

Dude, I totally shipped Marilla/Rachel. They're perfect because they're totally different in most ways but so alike in others. And they're both two of my favorite fictional characters in anything ever, so...

They end up living together! It's totally canon.

Yeah I know, that was awesome too :) Also, Rachel's letters about it in Anne of the Island, where she seems to think Marilla is sort of off her rocker but loves her anyway.

Friend! I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one. I love Anne, but from the first book I fell hardest for Marilla. I love that by the time Rachel moves in Marilla's softened up enough that they can both take evident delight in winding each other up.

And I love Anne's (very Anne-ish) speech about them from Anne of the Island:

"I'm going home to an old country farmhouse, once green, rather faded now, set among leafless apple orchards. There is a brook below and a December fir wood beyond, where I've heard harps swept by the fingers of rain and wind. There is a pond nearby that will be gray and brooding now. There will be two oldish ladies in the house, one tall and thin, one short and fat... There'll be love there, Phil—faithful, tender love, such as I'll never find anywhere else in the world."

Yes, I totally adore Anne (in fact, she's one of the most relatable fictional characters ever for me), but Marilla has always been my top favorite character of that series. She has the best character arc too. It's just sooooo perfect, hitting all the best satisfying points and scenes of character development without being overdone, and written quite subtly compared to the general style of that time period too.

The more times I reread the books, the more I wish there were fic of Marilla and Rachel at Green Gables. I'd happily read it whether or not it was actual femslash.

Not my first non-canon pair but certainly my first femslash pairing.

Secret 10 - Anne of Green Gables (TV show)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-08 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Anne Shirley, played by Megan Follows, and Diana Barry, played by Schuyler Grant, from the TV adaptation of the series of books "Anne of Green Gables" by L.M. Montgomery. Anne is a young woman with light skin and wavy red hair. Diana has light skin and wavy dark hair. The two are wearing lacy tops and laying on their chests on a bed or similar surface together, talking. Anne has a closed fist against her head.]

They were my first non-canon ship ever.

They were also the first instance of irrationally hating another character for breaking up my ship.

IT'S AN ANNE OF GREEN GABLES SECRET OMG OMG.

I've never seen the sequel to the 1980s Anne of Green Gables movie (which I assume this is from), but 1) Megan Follows is making me question my heterosexuality and 2) Ho-lee shit that it the gayest screenshot I've ever seen.

In any case, Anne's crying jag from the book version about how she hates Diana's hypothetical future husband and her ~smiling face and puffed sleeves will hide her breaking heart~ when Diana gets married is simultaneously one of the most hilarious and most poignant things in the entire series. And LMM was just glorious at pulling those off, so that's saying something.

YOU MUST SEE THE SEQUEL. I mean, it doesn't follow the books very well (like, it's Anne teaching at a school but not at universty. Then it has the ending of Anne of the Island and the whole Gilbert-getting-sick thing. No Philippa or Roy Gardner.) BUT IT'S STILL SO GREAT.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I heartily agree, you MUST see it. I love the books and the miniseries equally, for different reasons. Jonathan Crombie as Gilbert Blythe is the closest I've ever come to experiencing my head canon from a book on screen!

What a good first non-canon ship, though. You have great taste, anon.
