Not every single character and every single problem, by any means, but I remember when a friend and I were in the car and she put on the Rent soundtrack, I was like "...Wow, I have no pity for pretty much any of these morons."

I don't even remember why in most cases, but I do recall everyone being so HORRIFIED that so-and-so got a job in his preferred field but NOT his ideal job, and it was so awful that he was selling himself out, and I was a few years unemployed at that point and just wanted to punch all of them in the face.

You are thinking of Mark, who sold a film to a corporation instead of being all free and Bohemian like the rest of the squatters in the musical. :)

Or you might be thinking of Ben, who became a businessman when he married a wealthy woman, and then made business decisions.

/kind of hates Rent

God, I used to love Rent so much and then I made the mistake of watching it last year for the first time in a while and I hated it. I wish I had never rewatched it so I could just remember enjoying it

i'm pretty sure the creator said he based them all on horrible people he knew. Makes sense when you realize he designed them to be so hateable.

Wow. So basically the people I knew who idolized these characters as living the dream were completely missing the point? Hahahahah.

They could probably be swapped out with the folks Larson knew, yeah.

having trouble finding where it said that though, so dont' quote me on it. It seems to me that he wasn't necessarily making characters he thought were likable as they were compelling, but I don't have a citation for you for that. It was definitely a bit autobiographical though, you can find those facts everywhere.

Sadly, the guy dying means not a lot of interviews from when it got big about his motivations.
