I'm of two minds on this.

1) I believe that it's every single person's right to pick whatever label they want for themselves, and absolutely not MY place to say whether that label should exist or what the requirements are to fit it. People's sexuality is purely their business and IDGAF. I mean yes, in all honesty, I sometimes roll my eyes at tumblr users with "pansexual biromantic INTJ" or whatever in their profile, because ugh special snowflake, but it's their business and harms me none, so whatever.

2) There are certain characters who are incredibly unlikely to see themselves as Sexuality X, Y, Z. For a variety of reasons: historically it wasn't a common label, historically the ideas about sexuality were totally different, culturally they're close-minded and not immersed in sexual politics and wouldn't be aware of the possibilities, etc, etc. Not impossible, but I'd need, like, a good explanation for why 19th century Sherlock Holmes referred to himself as asexual homoromantic or whatever.

(I'm also really generally adverse to labeling character or historical figures as ANYTHING. Because they don't exactly get the chance to declare themselves one thing or another, and it really should be up to them if you're going to know it with any certainty).

Seconding you number 2 (hur, number twooo)

If you want Glorfindel to sleep with Erestor, fine, more power to you. But when you start peppering the same fic with the words homosexual, heterosexual, etc. and start having characters spout off modern theories of sexuality, I'm going to stop taking you seriously.

I wish to offer you a great big WORD, and a virtual cupcake for this comment, mainly because I'm in the Hobbit fandom at the moment. I rather like keeping modern terms out of our pseudo-medieval fandom.

+1 about historical figures

When talking about bisexual erasure I really prefer when people say things like "slept with both men and women" rather than trying to label someone for their own agenda.

This is a very good comment, and I agree completely.

Seriously, if someone can explain to me how Tony Stark knows the word pansexual in the first place, I'll be less likely to roll my eyes when he declares himself that way, all right?

Well with Tony I could believe it... I bet he trawls all the corners of the internet and looks up all the knowledge especially if it's about sexuality. But I also think he wouldn't call himself pan because it doesn't sound sexy enough.

Tony is totally an AWS-sexual
