WIPs

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I've been burnt by WIPs before so I really only completed fic but there is this really well known fic series in my fandom that I'm interested in.

The only problem is that its 800,000 words and still nowhere near finished. This makes me think that it's never going to be completed and I'm not sure whether to give in and start it or not.

Tell me your WIP horror stories (whether your the author or the reader)

hahaha

I just keep starting something, getting bored with it, and starting a new thing.

Like if I don't finish something within a day I'm probably never gonna finish it.

Tips on how to change this are welcome.

Kinkmemes. The bane of my existence. So many awesome stories (usually non-kinky) that never get finished. ;_;

This. I don't know the word count BECAUSE it's a kinkmeme, but I've followed fics that were anywhere between 20-50 chapters and then they.. die ;_;

This one fic I followed had been a WIP for at least two years, regularly updated and still interesting, but I gave up when it reached chapter 160/? or something and the end was still nowhere in sight.

Other one wasn't that long, but the author had lost interest and the final chapters had been missing for several months. I don't know if it was intentional trolling or what, but when they finally posted the ending, what had been an A/B fic turned into a A/C fic (competing pairing) and B died in a rather Looney Toons fashion. It was kind of hilarious.

Chapter 160? It was Spirit of Whatever in the Mass Effect fandom?

There was this decent Slytherin!Harry story- one of the best ones I'd read, tbh- that I had been reading for a while (this was last year sometime). Then, the authors jumped fandoms to the next big thing, leaving a passive aggressive parting note telling the readers that they didn't want to put any more effort into a fic that wasn't getting much attention. The thing was, IT WAS a decently popular fic as far as I could tell. I always left nice comments and so did others. Ugh. The whole thing just irritated me, and still does.

I hate getting 20 chapters into a WIP and then the story takes a stupid or offensive turn. That's happened to me a few times too.

Honestly, I don't think I'd touch something 800k words long unless it were done. Really long fic like that just seems to sit and spin its wheels, never really going anywhere or getting somewhere slow because it's too bloated. I had this problem with a long WIP I tried to read last week.

I once started reading one of those super!smart Harry fics that was a regularly updated WIP. One day, out of the blue, the author leaves a really passive aggressive message saying he's deleted all 150k of it off his hard drive and isn't going to continue it at all because he was going to get himself ready to start an art degree at uni in the next couple of months.

It was hilarious and distressing at the same time.

How about the fact that I haven't even started what I've wanted to write for like three months?

Like others, I've come across many great stories on kink memes that got abandoned after 20+ chapters.

I'm writing a crossover WIP that is like, two chapters shy of complete. I have a vague idea of how I want it to end. All I have to do is write it.

I've been sitting on it for a year. And it's worse because it's the only longish crossover in its section, so people keep finding it and leaving really nice and encouraging comments, and I feel like a heel for not finishing it.

One of these days I swear I'll get a work ethic.

Back in my very early fic-writing days I once started writing a fic that got to over 100 chapters (maybe over 150? I don't even remember) before I abandoned it, unfinished. Years later I'd still get occasional comments asking me to finish, but I had completely lost interest and didn't even remember where I was going with it at that point. :/ I used to start fics all the time and then leave then unfinished whenever a shiny new plot bunny came along, but this was by far my longest and most popular effort.

I still feel kind of bad about leaving people hanging like that... but then I also remember how terrible the fic was and have to side-eye those same people for their taste tbh. Anyway, this is why I no longer post fics unless I've already finished writing them.
