I think demisexual sexual is unnecessary because being 'demisexual' doesn't actually differentiate you from any other person of your encompassing orientation (hetero, homo, bi, pan) Like, two people could be hetero and 'demisexual' as the definition goes and have a very similar pattern of relationships and sexual history that no one else batted an eyelid at and people might even consider to fit so within the norm to seem boring. But only one of these people might actually identify as demisexual - and the only thing that after identifying as such is the mockery they would receive for needing to label their sexuality so specifically. And the other, ignorant demisexual would just continue to go about their business none the wiser and life no less fulfilled.

Whereas pan, as has been discussed, has a use because it means your sexuality specifically covers people who are trans*, genderfluid, intersex, etc. And you might argue that ideally people shouldn't have to have a specific label to specify this, because if you like a person enough things will be hunkydory - but things don't necessarily work out that way, and a lot of people are intolerant/phobic to boot.

Basically, pansexual is a differentiated orientation with a wider social purpose, unlike demisexual which means jack shit when compared with the wider spectrum of human interaction and sexuality.
