HI!

You are aware that referencing the crying game is a joke in pop culture right? Also, you know, Ru Paul, a million jokes in a million movies (maybe not the best representation of trans people in a majority of those cases but still an awareness of there existence). For fucks sake, it was referenced in goddamn Psycho. IT'S BEEN AROUND.

THERE ARE EPICALLY BAD MOVIES ABOUT IT

Who/where the fuck is this group unaware of the existences of the trans population?

As legitimate potential partners and not simply freaks of nature or comedy? Hows about almost literally everywhere in the United States?

... that's not what you said. You said, and thene responded to "Many, many more people would probably ask if they knew trans* people were a thing."

That implies not intolerance of trans people, but actual ignorance.

You are attacking others for your confusing text.

Re: HI!

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't mean intolerance. I meant knew they were a thing worthy of serious consideration. A whole lot of people think trans* people are only crazy or jokes and therefore not a ~real thing~ that anyone they know could be attracted to, and that is why they don't ask, because they don't consider them a real option someone might take.

That is what I meant. I stand by the sentiment.

Which makes a lot more sense. But I don't think I was the only one who needed that clarification.

I am digging the circularness of all this. If only the people of the world knew that trans* people existed, then they'd all query whether I, as a bisexual, fear trans* people and never date them, but fortunately I've never encountered this form of interrogation irl because nobody knows that trans* people exist. Such is the trans* conspiracy. No logical explanation is possible.

Re: HI!

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
No, that's not at all what I meant, unfortunately. The circular goes like this, instead:

-> person doesn't know of trans* people or identities
-> person likes cismen and ciswomen
-> person identifies as bisexual
-> person says they are bisexual and assumes it to mean cismen and ciswomen
-> people who know that person assume that this is what bisexual means
-> those people are not aware of trans* people or identities either, so never query them about inclusion
-> all those people continue on with the cisonly definition of bisexuality
-> one of those people discovers they too like ciswomen and cismen, so they must be bisexual like their friend

People like saku aren't causing the issue. It's people who identify as bisexual and use the word to mean cis only that are the problem. Take it up with them.

I'll take it up with them if I ever meet them, anon, I promise.

Did you mean to sound dismissive and disbelieving? You sounded dismissive and disbelieving. If that was your intention, you sound pretty sheltered.

If you do mean what you said, you may have a tough time. Because there are lots of them. Maybe not on tumblr, LJ, or DW, or your LGBT group, or your activist community... but all over Facebook and less "social justice oriented" places? In colleges? In bars?

If you look, you will find them. The ones who say they are bisexual but ewww trannys and ewww shemales, they just mean they like hot chicks and hot dudes? There are plenty in my experience. Just like there are plenty of gay men who think transmen not ~real men with real cocks~ and lesbians who think transwomen are ~gross~. You think bisexual people, or people who find out they like ciswomen and cismen then start to identify as bi, are magically are more enlightened than this? They're not.

That sure was a long response to a one-line comment and you sure did pack a lot of slurs into it.

Re: HI!

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who those slurs might apply to, I think I have the right to use them, especially to demonstrate discrimination.

And you are avoiding responding to the content by picking on the words I chose to use, which were not my words but words I have heard used by others which I have repeated to illustrate my point, which you have not addressed. If you aren't going to respond to the actual content of the comment, this conversation seems over. Yes?

You sure like talking.

Re: HI!

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Transphobia from many bisexuals and a whole lot of rest of the lgbt community is a real thing and it hurts to see it dismissed this easily as though it doesn't happen or isn't an issue. But it appears this has gone nowhere and I've wasted your time and mine with this. I'm sorry.

Re: HI!

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-09-10 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say the answer is to attack transphobia, not bisexuals and bisexuality. And yes, it has become an attack on inclusive bisexuals when I see anthologies edited by people who identify as queer and genderqueer get bad reviews for including stories that apparently don't meet a litmus test for crossing the magical bi/pan boundary.
