It's a roast. I don't think you understand the concept.

You are supposed to make the most degrading, sexist, racist, homophobic jokes toward someone. People do these things to see who can top who as the most vile joke teller.

It's one long The Aristocrats joke told by many people.

I don't think that's really what it is, though.

Yes, it is. That's why it's called a ROAST.

Honestly, google is your friend. Look it up. Comedy Central does a few roasts a year. I like watching them. The premise is always the same. Who can shit on the honorary the most through jokes. (As well as rib everyone else.)

The only part I found that went too far was James Franco himself against Seth Rogen, otherwise it seemed to be a pretty typical roast and one that I actually enjoyed watching (I did not enjoy Donald Trump's. And there was another one with Seth MacFarlane)

now i'm curious, what did he say?

James Franco said something about being gay and how Seth came in to his trailer during filming Pineapple Express and that Seth tried to rape him but that James was able to escape when Seth ran off after the ice cream truck, or something to that effect. I thought the rape part wasn't funny and took it a little too far.

Yeah, that's not what a roast is. A roast is insulting the person being roasted (typically "all in good fun"). It's not a multiperson "Aristocrats" joke.

I'm familiar with the form. It does involve people roasting the honorary, but I don't think that necessary means that you have to do bullshit gay jokes, or whatever. I think that's lazy and I think the people who go to that well are usually the least funny. It's not making fun of James Franco, it's doing so with dumbass gay jokes that's weird to me (especially because he's not actually gay AFAIK, so there's the whole element of "This person does not behave in ways that I associate with their gender! Obviously homosexual")

Hello, the Dean Martin roasts? Watched those with my dad back in the day. Hilarious and also - sexist and racists and crude.

that's exactly what a roast is. You got full on hate... out of love. What makes it work is it's the people who love you... at their worst.

Comedians are fucked up, basically. But it's always been like this.

i don't mind the concept of a roast. i am cool with the fact that comedians are criticizing james franco. i wish they would make critical, harsh, funny jokes about him that aren't lazy, dumb as shit, hackneyed gay jokes.
