Never mind Sailor Moon fans tend to ship every possible permutation of the Senshi (especially Moon/Mars, Mars/Venus, Moon/Venus, Jupiter/Mercury and yes Chibi-Moon, Saturn), and not without reason, there's a lot of Yuri subtext in Sailor Moon... some of it subtle, some of it obvious, and it's not just between Uranus and Neptune. Yes there is only one canon couple, but this series single handedly revived the Yuri genre and girl's and women's manga, there likely would not have been an Utena if it wasn't for Sailor Moon (especially since the anime versions share the same director).
Infamous Sphere once said something like, "it can be hard to tell if a woman's interest in another woman is platonic or romantic until one has her tongue down the other's throat." It's in her Bomb Girl's review, I'd have to look it up. Point being, there is subtext in Sailor Moon and to outside observers (and sometimes to themselves) it can be hard to distinguish a gay couple from good friends, so I see nothing wrong with reading it either way.
