I don't know what will be harder... Leaving the fandom I've been in for over fifteen years, or telling my best friend I'm not seeing her at the next con.

Even if you're 'leaving a fandom', is there no reason why you can't go to the con just to be with friends?

The few cons that I went to were purely to have fun and be with friends (though we did cosplay a few times and we definitely enjoyed some of the panels/previews/etc).

If they're really a best friend they'll understand you falling out of fandom, but it might be harder to understand if you're using it as an excuse not to see them (unless you see them at other places and they just look forward to conning with you as well).

For some people cons are quite expensive. If you no longer are in the fandom there are other things you might need your money for.

Fair enough. It could be a matter of not wanting to waste money. But I'd hope that if they call this person a 'best friend' they're not planning on just never seeing them again merely because they've fallen out of love with a/some fandom(s).

No idea, since we don't even know why you'd leave the fandom or not go to a con. Personal stuff, most likely?
