I know that feel, bro. It's why I got stuck leading EVERY lab and group project in college--not because I wanted to, but because no one else could do it well enough.

That being said, life is too short to let all the fun run out of fandom until it's just work. Maybe you can take an'indefinite hiatus' from whichever fandom commitment you'd least mind leaving, and see how that goes?

Yeah, you gotta start asking other responsible folks. Dont' wait for volunteers.

Otherwise, you might just have to say "fuck it" and let it run into the ground.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
seconding this

also, you don't have to abandon everything, just hand over a thing or two, for example, the tumblr, one of the communities

I'm sure you can think of a person or two who would help if asked but who is too shy or whatever to volunteer out of nowhere

(Anonymous) 2013-09-11 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder how many of the power-hungry drama queens feel the same way.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-11 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
if you're implying op is a power hungry drama queen, if they were i doubt they'd want to leave and give it all up js

(Anonymous) 2013-09-11 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
a bit of that, a bit of "maybe the other people aren't as bad as you think"

mostly just "perspective and opinions are weird"

(Anonymous) 2013-09-11 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
it sounded to me like op has been modding shit for a while. as smeone else who has modded roleplays and shit, you really CAN tell who the obvious wankers are who volunteer immediately to take over because then they can do what THEY want with everything instead of having to be fair to all the players. and those people are the ones who always DO volunteer first cause they want to do everything their way

sometimes uncertainty is a good thing if it means they don't think their way is the right way and this is their big chance to make everyone else listen

Fandom is not your responsibility. It's not a job. You are not the person who should be holding whatever communities you're in together alone. Fandom is a hobby and supposed to be fun. Your only goal should be to be happy.

You wanna know who comes first and is the most important?

You.

You're burnt out? Give a massage a month or two in advance that you're taking a break. Give a clear date when you'll be leaving. Leave on that day. If you ever wanna come back, do and if you don't then don't. However, I advise that if you do come back you establish yourself in a separate way than how you are now. This obviously isn't working for you. So if you come back do it as a casual or something.

Good luck dude and remember you don't owe anyone else anything. You just owe yourself happiness.

Give a massage

Are you giving out massages?

I will take one massage please.

This is what I get for coming on here burnt out after dealing with kindergarteners all day. Sorry.

Does that mean I don't get a massage :(
forgottenjester: (Default)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-09-12 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm not leaving fandom soooooo...

But hey, the moment I leave I will creepily give you a massage. How about that?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Can't we just like... okay I know this is weird but what if you just gave a massage anyway? And if you want you can pretend? To be leaving fandom? You can make a big fuss about if you want to. I can play the part of your followers begging you to stay.

I have followers? Hot shit.

Okay, so is this because you really want a massage or because you really want me?

I don't know dude, giving fandom people massages in exchange for breaks could get real dodgy real fast.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-09-11 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the point. Then they won't want you back.

Secret 5 - Fandom community organizing

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-12 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is black text over white blank background.]

I am very active in fandom. Lists, communities on LiveJournal and DreamWidth, tumblrs, organizing ficathons and roleplays...

Secret: I want to quit. It's burning me out.

Bonus secret: The only reason I'm not quitting is because the only people who volunteer to take over are the power-hungry drama queens that already cause all the wank and I know they will run everything into the ground.

That isn't your responsibility, you need to think about yourself. If you're truly being burnt out, take a break. It doesn't have to be permanent. Treat yo self!

[personal profile] anonlulz 2013-09-12 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Well aren't you a special snowflake who can do everything better than others?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't understand what was meant by "lists" and thus web searched "lists" and got this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_lists_of_lists

Too many lists.

On a more related note: Maybe don't hand anything over to anyone and just take a break? Other fans can always start up their own list/comm/tumblr/etc. in the meantime if they want. And you can always come back to yours once you feel you're ready.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
I had to take a break from fandom a couple years ago and I was the maintainer for lj comms in two big fandoms. I handed stuff over in one fandom but in the other I was in a situation like yours and there wasn't anyone willing to do it who I was willing to hand the comms over to. I just told people the comms were going on hiatus and took the break I needed. It was the best thing I've ever done for myself in fandom. I was so burnt out and fandom just wasn't fun anymore, but now it is again and has been for a while.

Speaking from experience : the people who volunteer to take over fandom responsibilities are usually the power hungry people who want the title but won't do the job in the end.

I always had better results from figuring out myself who was invested enough in the activity and seemed to have the qualities I deemed necessary for the job. Sometimes they don't want the responsibility, and that's usually a good sign, I found out! Sometimes, more likely, they don't really have the time. Don't give up at once, after all they don't have to take up exactly the same amount of time that you've been spending on it.
Once it's in their hands, it's their rules.

But if you're active in all those domains, just split it between different people. One Tumblr, one for lists, etc. Or name several moderators.

There may be wank in the end, but you know that wankers will wank no matter what, so at least give them a good reason to do so! :P
And if they run everything down, well... you will have tried.

If you're burned out, you need to stop. I waited too long in some fandoms and really regret it in retrospect : it wasn't worth the pain.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
OP

I feel your pain.

My fandom has a couple of truly amazing mod that make the whole thing better. Than a couple of new mods came along (with their new comms and fests) and it's just drama and basically everything gets done only when they can or when they think it should instead of listening to what the community wants.

I dunno if mods should do as the please or if they should listen. But i think if you're running shit, you're not running it only for yourself, but for the fandom. I hope you find someone you can trust.
