Help :C

(Anonymous) 2013-09-11 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I verbally accepted a job (have filled out no paperwork) and I have to go to orientation on Friday. I am regretting the decision because I have no 100% certain way to get there. I don't have a license or car (I am working on the license) and the person I could count on just said it might be a problem taking me. So...I don't know what to do. Take my chances or call back and say I can't take the job.

research transit routes/find another ride? You have a couple days to find a way there.

Is there any public transportation options? Even if they invovle some healthy walking distances?

OP

I wish! I live in rural midwest so no buses or anything. It is a 25 minute drive so walking is a no go (I did walk to my last job so walking isn't a problem). Hell, I'd even pay someone weekly to take me back and forth but I don't know anyone. I don't really know anyone where I live. : /

Craigslist

If you are willing to pay, it's worth a shot. Did you offer to pay person you could count on? Any family in the vicinity?

The person works which is why it is iffy. It isn't that they don't want to, it is just that some days they might not be able to. But I will look at craigslist!

Does anyone have a friend or family member who needs money and would be willing if you paid?

You could always ask the place of work if they have a carpool set up that you can join.

No taxis? I also live in rural widwest, but even we have taxis.

If it's within a reasonable distance, taxi.

Or take your chances.

Seriously, it's hard getting a job in this economy (assuming you're in the US). Turning one down just because you're afraid transportation might get dodgy might be something you soon regret.

It might be worth buying a bike.

Didn't see the drive distance!

Seriously--unless this is minimum wage, not even a little bit above it--try the above options.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-09-11 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That is the thing I am worried about. I have been unemployed for a year and this is a job WITH insurance that wants me. INSURANCE! I could actually go to the doctor (not been in like 5 years) and get new glasses (I have had mine for 4 years).

I don't drive either, and I hate when this sort of thing happens. :/ People don't always realize that canceling their offer to get you somewhere can be... kind of a big deal. (Unless this person had an emergency come up or something.)

Is this the kind of job where you'd be comfortable asking about getting rides? If you have a medical (or other) reason for not driving that might give you a bit of leeway. Otherwise, I'd ask around and see. Does anyone you know ever go that direction?

No cabs, either? I get that would be an expensive route that you wouldn't want to rely on *forever* but if you're trying to get a driver's license and vehicle (and have people who can sometimes give you a ride) it wouldn't have to be a forever thing.

SA

Also, was it just a matter of your ride maybe not being able to get you to orientation on that day or your ride not being able to ever take you anywhere again? Because if it's the former, before you jump right to "I can't take this job!" explain your difficulty and see if the training can be rescheduled. Because then, either they'll yes, or they'll say no.

And if they think your transportation issue is too big of an issue, they'll say so. So let them be the ones to decide that before you give up a job.

My ride works. So most days they should be able to bring me but some days they won't be able to. And me getting back from work is also a big issue because I most definitely get off before they will.

Well you are going to have to wait, simple as that. Till you can afford a car sacrifices have to be made.

Re: Help :C

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
This. I once spent three hours reading a book in the breakroom because my ride in had an earlier shift than me.

Oh, that is no problem. I actually plan on spending time at the public library that is nearby.

Oh! Then perfect! You even have a good place to wait.

If this is just an occasional problem, you shouldn't let it deter you--heck, maybe there's even someone at work you'll be able to carpool with.

OP

I hope so. :3 It might be a bit embarrassing to ask (I'm 24 and don't have a license), but I'll suck it up.

I would say you should definitely try hard to find some transportation, and not just give up summarily. It would be easier than trying to find another job. If you can't work things out with your ride, try calling and asking them if they can reschedule for a time when you can make it? Sorry, I don't have much to offer. But good luck!
