Because like it or not, the face of fanfic is creepy porn. Creepy porn fanfics are the one that get the most attention. Maybe Joe Schmoe over there writes fluffy gen, but you know what most people think of when they hear fanfic? Creepy rape porn, often involving real people. And it's safe to say that there's far more creepy porn than fluffy gen. If you can't see why a lot of people who aren't in fandom think that's weird or disturbing, then you've spent too much time online.

Well I understand that people can become judgmental and dismissive of things that have a limited knowledge or understanding of, particularly when that interest is seen as mainly by women, but I don't see why that automatically translates into 'hide away in shame'. But writing about sex, even hardcore sex, and relationships is hardly the sole domain of fanfiction.
