Did I miss some obscure meaning of "canon" where it actually means "the first time a character appeared" or something?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 01:44 am (UTC)(link)They're definitely a canon. BBC Holmes is canon within discussions of BBC Holmes. There's obviously a canon within and regarding that show. People are trying to talk about a broader sense of canon, a canon of Sherlock Holmes in general, and depictions of Sherlock Holmes, and who Sherlock Holmes really is as a character abstracted from any portrayal of him. And in that conversation, people are trying to assign relative degrees of canonicity. And they are saying that, in a discussion about the canonicity of the many depictions of Holmes, the most canonical of all is the original ACD Holmes. Because he is. Therefore, although it is true that ACD Holmes is canonical for ACD Holmes works and BBC Sherlock is canonical for BBC Sherlock, it is also true that ACD Holmes is more canonical than BBC Sherlock in broad discussions of Sherlock Holmes the character and Holmesiana generally.
