A refurbished MacBook Air is working out really well for my spouse so far. It's a bit on the pricy side, but it is very light for what you get out of it, the battery life is pretty good, and if you can afford the AppleCare, it's worry-free for three years.

(I never thought I'd end up liking the Air, tbh—I like Macs but I've always preferred the "heavier" pro end of options. But then my spouse needed a new laptop and the Air turned out to be the right choice.)

forgive me if this is a dumb question... but what's Apple Care? is that like an extended warranty or something?

yeah the only thing with the Macbook is switching over to an unfamiliar OS (and also the price)

how are you finding the Mountain Lion OS in comparison to Windows?

AppleCare is basically an extended warranty, yeah, but it's possibly the best one I've ever encountered. If you have AppleCare and something goes wrong, getting it fixed is free, no matter HOW bad it is. I literally had my work computer die on me in the last month of coverage and took it in to the store, and after many efforts to replace all the innards, they just went "Fuck it, here's a brand new computer that replicates the specs including the memory upgrade you installed later by yourself, NO CHARGE, ENJOY," and... given it's a 27-inch iMac, I am perpetually grateful I dodged losing a $2000 computer by spending $300 three years ago.

Aaaaah, my feelings about Windows vs. Mac OS could get long and complicated. (tl;dr I don't like the direction that either OS has gone in since XP and Snow Leopard.) But it is worth pointing out that you don't HAVE to use Mac OS just because you bought a MacBook. You can dual boot both with BootCamp, OR if you have a thumb drive to download the appropriate Boot Camp drivers onto, you can just skip having Mac OS entirely and install Windows as your sole operating system.
