Exactly. I'm boggled that people are comparing writing fanfiction to other hobbies like sports or bird-watching or whatever. Fanfiction does have that introverted, weird, sexual fantasy stigma behind it. Even if you stick solely to gen fic, it can be hard to avoid the more sexual side of fandoms. I'm not following any tumblr blogs that are particularly adult-oriented, yet I still see some pretty explicit fanfics, photo manips and fanart pop up on my dashboard.

Not that there's anything wrong with fanfiction as wish-fulfilment or sexual fantasy. I myself ship a lot of characters in a lot of fandoms. But when so many online fandoms revolve around that sexual side and sex-oriented fanfic, then don't be surprised when people on the outside find it strange or a little icky.
