All characters you love will die, all characters you hate will stay alive.
This shit made me drop the comic.

Secret 4 - Transformers More Than Meets The Eye (comic)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-12 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is many Transformers. So many. They are upright sort of humanoid robots. The picture is from the comic book series "Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye".]

I can't stand More Than Meets The Eye. Everyone talks about how Roberts makes them care for the characters and their "feels", but to me it just seems like the comic uses death/the threat of death as a form of cheap drama.

Death has lost all the shock value and I don't bother guessing anymore what's going to happen next. Ultra Magnus deserved better than what happened to him.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
What happened to him?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
A wholly insane Tyrest (he got a hole in his brain module and thought he saw God) ripped his head from his shoulders and smashed it into a puddle of energon. :(

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
He COULD still be alive. We've seen other characters lose their heads and not die.

Actually, I'm a little surprised to hear someone take issue with the method of Magnus' potential death and not the whole armor thing.

SA (not original anon, though. Forgot to say)

I could care less about him being a shellformer. It was a weird plot development, yes, and I didn't know how It in no way changes who Magnus is/was. Plenty of Cybertronians have changed what they look like, especially after the war started.

If I say Magnus being in a power suit means he's not the Magnus I know and love, well...that also means I have to condemn Perceptor and OPTIMUS PRIME, among many others, to that same fate. I am not willing to do that.

(as for him being alive: His head looked entirely smooshed. But he is in the medibay of awesome - but not so awesome as to save Ambulon. :(

Also, I feel like it's building towards Tailgate being put in the power suit. Although god knows Roberts likes to do the opposite of expectations.)

AYRT

No, no, I love that you're NOT complaining about the shellformer thing - it's a nice change from what I keep seeing in other places.

Yeah, the head did look entirely smooshed, on that subject, but as you said, Roberts does apparently live to subvert expectations. I'm kind of thinking Tailgate won't end up in the suit, specifically for that reason.

Re: SA (not original anon, though. Forgot to say)

For me, the fact that he's without a head is far more important than any thoughts I had about the power suit factor. Perhaps if all were well with the world that would be different, but it's really REALLY not and he's possibly/probably dead and I really don't understand the fandom, because I would think that, you know, DEAD trumps "ruined 4eva!!!!". I was confused, and there was a week I didn't like it. But then I went back and reread Shadowplay, and all the stuff about monoformers and bias/discrimination against Cybertronians who felt what they wanted to do in life wasn't well-suited to their alt forms and realized that, nope. It doesn't really matter if Mags is big and blue, small and green, or if something terrible happened to his frame and he had to live out the rest of his life as the Verity holoavatar. He's still Ultra Magnus. Brain became clear on that point once it realized it.

One of these days Roberts is going to do the exact thing we all expect, just to fuck with our heads completely. :)

Agreed 10000000%

I might agree if Dai Atlas really is dead. That said, I approach MTMTE the way I do the Battle Royale novel. We only know these folks for a short time, fall in love with them, and then they die.

And I stick by it because the characters are still amazing and lovely, the dialogue brilliant, the overall storyline creative and thought out, the puns fantastic and the art stunning. MTMTE is still one of the best comics around.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
It kind of looks - on page 16 - like Star Saber shoved his hand into Dai Atlas' chest, grabbed his spark chamber, and crushed it. I'd be willing to bet that Dai Atlas stays dead.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I thought he just shoved his sword through Dai's head?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
No, no, look at the last two panels. You can see Star Saber's arm going into Dai Atlas' chest on the one on the left - see the chins up there near the top of the panel? and the motion lines and he shoves his fist up in there? - and then in the last panel on that page, the bright light that's the spark getting squished as the light in Dai Atlas' eyes (which is reflected up from the spark chamber, according to the short story Zero Point) goes out.

DA

Looks like you're right. I was with AYRT and thought it was just a sword through the head. Damn, that sucks. Drift never got to see him again! Assuming, of course, that Star Saber isn't a suit. We know Drift's had voices in his head for a while, which could have easily been Tyrest, and that the tearing down and public shaming/beating organized by Rodimus didn't break him down so far that he just killed his grandrolemodel.

They are on a planet with billions of sparks, though. Including some magic ones, and some very amazing medical tools. Can't they just put a new one in Dai? Please?

AYRT

Drift's had voices in his head? Since when?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Annual was the best example: "I'VE DONE EVERYTHING YOU ASKED."

It was very much a "talking to someone" moment rather than a "damn you, universe!" thing. I don't think Drift has enough self-worth to actually damn the entire universe for his problems. Roberts made comments to a similar affect after the issue came out, but I can't find them now.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Comments about voices in Drift's head, I mean, not Drift's self-worth!

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
I vaguely wondered at that point if he wasn't talking to Prowl, what with the whole everything you asked bit, although the "how about a little help" bit doesn't fit there.

I wish you could find the Roberts comments, too. Got any other examples? (Or maybe I'll just have to reread, you know, everything. As if I needed an excuse...)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Alas, MTMTE details aren't something I'm good at thinking about at the moment. Whenever I think about the comic there's too much panicked screaming in my mind over the idea that everyone I love may very well be dying in less than a month.

I seem to recall, however, that going back and reading after the annual I got a bit more hints of something more going on with Drift than just random ideas. My initial idea was that Dai Atlas said "come find me" sometime in the past and he was talking to HIM. But, again, it doesn't quite fit. The second Tyrest started rambling on about Primus and portals I started to think about Drift's increasingly strange ideas (his crew bio still reads "each crazier than the next"). So even if the idea of Drift wearing a Star Saber-shaped outfit and killing his mentor's mentor makes me feel ill, I'm disturbed at how plausible it seems. After all, Saber was a brainmaster originally, iirc, which means...he was basically created as a power suit. The only thing that doesn't really fit there - and it is kind of a big one - was Dai's dying line about SS letting the Legislators into Crystal City.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
That whole conversation, I think, makes it unlikely that (if Star Saber is a suit, which let's assume is the case for the purposes of this particular bit of speculation) Drift is in the suit RIGHT NOW - it seems to be the same Star Saber that let the Legislators in, and given the timeline that we're pretty sure we have, it can't be Drift. He's been with the Autobots during pretty much the entire window in which the Circle could have been kidnapped.

Dammit, now I really do have to reread everything. EVERYTHING. I planned on sleeping tonight, you know. NOT ANY MORE.

I don't think that's entirely fair, though - issue 13 had zero threat of death and was still an incredibly engaging read.

The Shadowplay arc also had no threat of death - most of its players are still alive in the present! - and again, excellent story.

Even in issue 12, which had quite a bit of violent fighting, didn't really threaten the main characters with death to create drama; because of its nonlinear storytelling, you knew that the characters in question were still alive. The tension came from how they got damaged, with the revelation being that Whirl actively tried to kill Cyclonus without caring that Rewind was in the way, and seeing how Cyclonus protected Rewind.

A big part of the writing that Roberts does - that he's always done (look at Eugenesis) - is exploring the question of exactly how much damage a Transformer can take, with the answer being something along the lines of "a mega fuck ton." The tail end of issue 6 picks that idea up and runs with it, what with Rung surviving the shot to the head.

The idea that anyone can die certainly isn't a new one, but it's one that MTMTE embraces wholeheartedly and actually seems to be sticking to. OP might find it a cheap thrill, but I certainly prefer it to the Revolving Door Of Death so often seen in other comics.

tl;dr - I respectfully disagree with OP. :P

Personally, I think the deaths may be plentiful, but handled well enough that the general shock factor tends to be amazingly good (Pipes D:) or amazingly sad (REWWWWWWIIIIIIIIIIND ;_;.) Then again, I am super bias and I think MTMTE is the best thing ever; it's just so cleverly written and packed with great characters and secrets that I can't not love it, flaws or not.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
At least when people are tortured or die horrible deaths in MTMTE they are serving a purpose and make the other characters behave differently, for whatever reason.

It could be RID, where everything has gone to hell and it doesn't make a damn bit of sense, inside or outside of the narrative. Hell, I know two people who are desperately hoping Prowl is killed by Tyrest's cleansing-bomb thing just so he is free of the entire fiasco that's turned him into the exact antithesis of what he is and everything he stands for. :(
