Deanna is absolutely on my list of potential future baby names. I generally nothing wrong with giving your kids names of fannish significance. If it's important to you, if you like what the name represents, then why not? People have been naming their children after Biblical and literary characters for centuries. I don't see much of a difference.

That said, I am in favor of keeping it within reason. I legitimately met a guy once who named his son Jiraiya. I shudder to think what that poor boy's adolescence is going to look like.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with the name having fannish significance, I have a problem when it's an inherently weird name. If you want to name your kid James and it's because of Captain Kirk, that's cool. I mean, it's not something I would do, but it's chill. I think what people are objecting to is more the "giving your children really bizarre f&sf names" part of it. I have a problem with Lwaxana, not with Deanna.

Adolescence? I wonder how such a name looks like on a job application.

There was a joke a while a back that went something to the extent of "When naming your child, ask yourself which scenario fits better: 'Introducing the freshman congresswoman from the ninth district, _____ Smith" or "The Boom Boom Room is proud to present _______.'"
