Finally got around to playing Catherine.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Got it for xmas.

I do not like it.

I mean the gameplay mechanics are fun enough, but the story reads as a collection of every reason I ever had to hate men.

Stupid developmentally challenged boys mistreating women and whining about it. It's basically "Poor Menz: the videogame."

Question: have you finished it?

Because I heard the ending... yeah. Finish it. Or read about the ending.

da: I haven't beaten this game or come close, but there are a few endings, no?

I have not. I probably won't either. I don't mind spoilers, tho, if you feel like sharing?

It's an Atlus/SMT game. There are multiple, wildly different endings depending on the choices you made. Which ending do you mean?

I never played it. However, I'm under the impression that at least some of the endings consider the pathetic guy kinda pathetic or overcoming patheticness.

I might be wrong, but honestly games like this you can't fully judge until you know the ending(s).

Not... really.

(SPOILERS)

He pretty much just gets the choice of "follow society's expectations and marry pregnant girlfriend, run off with new girlfriend because she's younger and cuter and older pregnant girlfriend has expectations of him now, or ditch them both and fly off into space."

There is no good ending. There is no "talk to them about your own hopes, dreams, and desires - then grow as a person". There's "do what girl A wants you to do", "do what girl B wants you to do", and "fuck them both and rrrruuuunnnn awaaaayyy!!!!".

I tried to play it, but I'm a wimp and if I have to replay a level a billion times without taking out a sword, I get bored. I did watch gameplay videos for it tho. The endings are... interesting. The lead also changes depending on which woman you go for and if its a good or bad ending.

It... was honestly kind of disappointing for an Atlus game. There was nothing deeper to it than "man has not grown up yet - girlfriend pregnant! does he step up or run away with new girlfriend!?!?!". Nothing philosophical, nothing mind-altering. Worse, while it was ostensibly set in the West the characters were so painfully Japanese-socialized it was kind of laughable.

...It is? O_o I thought it was set in Japan [Disclaimer: I've only seen game play videos. Never played it myself and have no real interest in playing it.]

Nope. It's set in an English-speaking country, and a set of dialogue reveals that it's a country in which Asians are a minority.

Wow...I thought it was just games doing the magic voodoo of "Everyone now speaks a language the gamer understands!" since it had such a strong Japanese feel to it. @_@

I really liked catherine for its atmosphere and gameplay, but yeah, the story lowered it a few notches. I didn't mind the premise because I thought it would go somewhere, but once I got a few endings and replayed it a couple times, I was put off by how linear it was and how bland the endings were.
