I know I usually say ship and let ship...

...but I just can't like them. It came out of nowhere and Uhura was the only female character in anything resembling a major role, so when she got saddled with a love interest, I rolled my eyes so hard I could almost see my brain.

You are not the only one who thinks this. It would have been plenty awesome if she had shut down Kirk's advances and left it at that.

Hey, I do too

Eh, that's kind of my take on it. On one hand, I genuinely did like these two together. I thought they made a nice couple and I like the way their personalities complemented each other. I'm mostly a K/S and K/S/U shipper, but I still liked the movie romance.

...but, yeah, the fact that this romance existed at all still bothered me because it felt like yet another way the movies marginalized female characters. There is like one serious real female character (are there any other female characters besides her and Amanda that say more than a single line in the first movie?), and she gets saddled with a romance which no other characters besides this couple have even a hint or indication of. >.<

So I don't really have a problem with the ship, so much as the fact there WAS a ship.

The problem wasn't that she got a love interest, the problem was they didn't really let her do anything outside of it. There was like one throwaway line about her hearing something in communications and nothing else, and then in the newer movie she spoke to the Klingons which didn't end up amounting to anything.

maybe it's me but weren't Uhura and Bones the ones who saved Kirk's life in the end?
I seem to remember, also, that her "hearing something in communications" in the first movie was the one information that essentially saved everyone. As for the scene with the Klingons, suffice to say that the mere fact she, alone, went talking to them well knowing they could torture her and kill her makes her a fucking badass queen.

"I'm not the only one who thinks this, right?"

ha! I hate people who write that when it's so obvious that they know they aren't the only ones thinking that. Asking for self validation much.
