I realllly didn't like them in the first movie. They came off as very heavy handed and I wasn't looking forward to seeing more of them in ST:ID. But I ended up really liking their interaction in the sequel, I guess because it was more based in bickering/joking and Kirk was there to be like "Wut, don't drag me into this!" So, I definitely see what you're saying.
