I go commando all the time (unless I'm wearing a dress or skirt obviously).

I also go braless sometimes, but usually only if the shirt has one of those built in shelf bras, is tight enough to support my boobs, or is cut in a way that the bra would be visible.

My parents joke about the commando thing, but are so use to it by now since I'm been doing it since I was a teen (and apparently I went to kindergarten sans underwear once, but I don't remember that XD).

If your mom (or dad) is that invested in what you're wearing or not wearing... tell them kindly that it's really none of their business (provided you're over eighteen) and especially if you live on your own.
