[TW] Sexual harassment?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
I guess it's stupid to admit to remembering shit that happened years ago because of a TV show, but I guess that's the way it goes sometimes.

I guess I could use your guys' views on something that happened to me a few years ago. Do you think maybe I was kind of sexually harassed, or am I just over thinking this shit?

A few years ago, when I was a senior in college (about 21), I had a really skeevy French professor. Like, a white American guy in his late 60's or early 70's who would single out a couple of petite white girls from each of his classes to be a total creep to. I was one of them.

For me, during a class discussion he invited us to define the word coquette; when I stepped up to the plate, and said, "A teasingly flirtatious young woman," he said really suggestively to me, "Oh, I heard that was your reputation." I was so horrified, and everyone in class sort of went saucer eyed at that. (Everyone was kind of shocked, because I actually had the reputation of being a really hard line dedicated student, so...)

I was also doing a lot of physical training at the time, and a lot of the times he would be in the gym, too. A few times, he came over probably a few feet away and sort of... eye banged me? while I was in the gym using the machines. So uncomfortable.

He tried to talk to me a few times while I was there, and once said, "Do you come here often," with this kind of a leer and looking me up and down, with the sort of tone of voice a guy would use in a bar picking up chicks, not talking to your student who's about 50 years your junior. I mean, I'm totally chill with talking to guys in the gym, we talk about physical training sometimes, but this was emphatically not one of those conversations.

There was other stuff, like touching my wrist or arm, same with the other girl I knew.

I dunno, this probably all sounds like I'm being histrionic and ridiculous. But he made me, and several other girls, incredibly uncomfortable. I've never told anyone about this, and honestly now I feel kind of stupid.

It seems hard to "say" whether or not it was harassment without seeing his expression while saying it, hearing the tone, etc. But it does sound creepy and if it felt like harassment to you along with several other girls, it probably was.

yes it was

at the very least, that was very, very inappropriate

wtf

it's like dude's trapped in the past when that sort of thing was unfortunately tolerated

Look, if you are having a reaction to it that to this day makes you uncomfortable, it was harassment. And you have the right to call it whatever you need to call it to help yourself get over it.

This sounds incredibly skeevy and creepy, and it irks me that he got away with it. If he was a professor, you might consider going to one of the professor check-out sites and posting this story there for other girls to read. If it happened to you, you are probably not the only one, and forewarning might help future girls in his class to be prepared call him on his crap.

You don't ever have to take unwanted advances like that from anyone. Remember that- it's perfectly fine to yell "stop!" or to back away, to call security. You deserve to feel safe, you didn't deserve to be harassed, and you most certainly are not stupid. <3 <3 <3

It was definitely unwanted sexual attention, but harassment... Quite possibly, because of his position of power over you (being your teacher). That kind of attention is mostly annoying if it is a random guy, but teachers are in a position to pressure you and then the rules change.

I had a driving teacher constantly touching my leg and arm (putting on my safety belt for me, like ON MY BREASTS etc.) while calling me his little friend and sweetheart. I wish I had reported him, but it was too minor to make a formal complaint, yet... Took me 14 year to get my license after that.
