I really don't understand this mindset. It's one thing to need some extra cash for a short time in an emergency (i.e. for a month or two after losing a job or something). But this new attitude I've been seeing with people just asking for money at random from their followers...what? Why do you think this is okay? Do these people ask their offline friends for money this way?

It's one thing if you plan to give back somehow (i.e. promising fanart to anyone who chips in for a new laptop on your behalf, something I've seen before). Hell, not too long ago, even when people were in an emergency, they usually tried to make arrangements retroactively to pay people back somehow or give them something back (fanfic, fanart, tutorials, etc). But this weird new thing of people just asking for money, not being in a real emergency, and not really seeming to give anything back...it's kind of creeping me out, actually.

While Tumblr has been fantastic for many things, it's also created this weird culture of encouraging dysfunctionality and dependency, and I'm extremely worried that people getting money from followers without giving back or anything is the first step towards something even worse.
