(frozen comment) TW: Rape

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, people can be that poor. I was one of them. When your boss cuts your hours by almost 30% and you're told "rent in two weeks or you're out on the street," you don't have time to screen roommates. And I didn't have anyone I could borrow from. I ended up with a roommate whom I found out the hard way was a drug-pusher and convicted rapist.

I honestly think maybe you're arguing a different thing? I understand there are people so poor they cannot afford rent, I was one was one of the people who ended up not being able to afford rent even with roommates and ended up in a runaway shelter. I do not understand how being poor explains away having to rely on money from other people and somehow not being able to use that time to find a roommate.

I'm pretty sure everyone is talking about people who can't afford their rent on a regular basis because they aren't living within their means and repeatedly ask other people to help. I said I don't understand how that can be a reasonably continuous situation. Typically when an adult's financial situation changes drastically they have to reevaluate and cut back. It is not offensive to suggest getting a roommate is a solution. When it comes down to it people are not entitled to live on their own.

There are always going to be extremes and exceptions. I didn't really get the impression that was what people were talking about. You yourself said you didn't have anyone to borrow from and you were in exceptional, unexpected circumstances. The subject (as I understood it anyway) was about people not wanting to stop lending money to a habitual asker who hasn't taken basic actions to bring their finances to a manageable level.

eta: I stand by saying that if someone is borrowing money regularly they should be able to understand they do not have the ability to live independently and that they also have time to find a roommate.

This is what I'm arguing with:

"*tbh, I don't really get how people have the audacity to ask strangers to pay their rent for them. It's a regular, monthly payment and if you haven't got your finances together, that is your fault"

So no, I'm not arguing a different thing. Anon opened the door with that one.

Agree to disagree because I read someone "not having their finances together" as them being irresponsible or short sighted, not someone being unable to handle unexpected, circumstances beyond their control and genuinely needing help.

Fine, do whatever absurd mental gymnastics and hair-splitting you have to in order to agree with an ass-blastingly stupid and degrading off-topic comment so you don't feel like a total privileged assmunch. I sure as hell can't stop you.

Oh seriously thank you. I always get flustered and anxious when disagreeing with people and worry they're awesomely cool people I'd die to be besties with who will always think of me as an awful ignorant person. I'm always relieved to find out I've actually been talking to someone whose opinion I wouldn't care about.

So you keep replying anyway. Good show.

And no, I would never want to be "besties" with a turd like you.

You really are the nicest troll! Thank you for erasing any niggling worry I made an ass of myself in this thread! <3

For what it's worth, I don't think you're a troll.

But...

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Why yes, I am mad at being told it's my fault that I had to choose between eviction and getting raped by my roommate, and that getting raped was the "good" option because at least I didn't beg for money on Tumblr.

We get it, your life is hard. Precious advise from me would be: don't lose your time here replying to useless threads and maybe try and go do something to improve your present status.
