There's a difference between risk and certainty, and you're obviously conflating the two. No one chooses to be a murder victim. Many people choose situations that put them at risk of murder, however, because that's how being an adult works. Safety is not a guarantee.

When you have a roommate who doesn't pay their bills (and all of my roommates except one have been like that), you're still living by yourself financially. You're just paying double the price and not getting the benefit of privacy.
