Agreed in all situations except kink memes. :)

I prefer it in anything I've signed up to. A lot of the times, I'm in a work/school/library environment while reading my f-list. Someone could get nosy and look over my shoulder (it's happened before, really).

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I just don't see the point with kink memes. There are comment limits anyway, the fic is why you're there, and the prompts/fills will never show up on your flist. It seems a strange thing to expect.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Why are you on kinkmemes at school? That is your own fault if you get cuahgt.

You: Why are you on kinkmemes at school?

Me: A lot of the times, I'm in a work/school/library environment while reading my f-list.

In which case kinkmemes shouldn't be a problem since the comments on those don't actually pop up on your flist.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. Same goes for tumblr. Fandom friends, I like you, but could you please stop posting that super page stretching million-vertical-panels fancomic without a "read more"?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh this. I feel like all the social norms we all take for granted on LJ (or DW, LJ-style blogging sites) are thrown out the window on Tumblr. Lack of cuts are annoying. But far, far worse IMO is the spoilers- people posting untagged spoilers, outside of a cut- pictures, discussing plot points, etc. ARGHH so frustrating.

/sorry I went on a rant there, couldn't help it

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
This bugs me too, though I see it more on Tumblr these days.

You know what else bugs me? That the Tumblr iOS app doesn't recognize 'read mores' even if the author put it in - Unless it's a reblog. Fic takes longer to scroll past on a phone. /first world problems

Ohgodyes, one of my friends often posts HUGE picspams and drabble dumps, it drives me nuts! I had to adblock her photobucket, devArt and LJ scrapbook but there's nothing I can do for the drabbles save for mulling over defriending her.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
has anyone asked her to use cuts before?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
how do youdo that? the block thing

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
If you have adblock, right-click on the picture and go down to where it says "block this ad" or some such. It will help you from there.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
sometimes two pictures are linked to each other like two halves of a comic.

I mean I sorta see on things like fic chapters or long drabbles. (though one's idea of long may vary.) Sure cuts are easy but some people may not want to put a cut on a post with two or three pieces of artwork.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
if several pics are linked, you cut the whole thing, you don't eat your flist with your big ass post. It's really anoying and you are not doing you (or your flist) a favor by not using a cut.

If people want to see/read your work, they will, a cut is not going to stop them.

Hardly anyone uses cuts for fic on Tumblr. It makes my scrolling finger sad.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
The J key is a godsend for those annoyingly long posts.

J control or alt?

I don't spend much time on LJ or dreamwidth anymore so this isn't the problem it used to be, but I do agree with the sentiment; it's nice when people think to use cuts.

However this thread reminded me that tumblr cuts are a thing. I had forgotten they existed...I never ever seem to see them.

People should use them more often for their meta and fic.

Secret 9 - DreamWidth art and fanfiction posting etiquette

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-14 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the post/journal entry input window of the website "DreamWidth". It shows various options to edit text and classify the post/entry. The option "LiveJournal Cut" is highlighted. It hides the content of a post from regular journal/community/friend/circle browsing so you have to enter the specific entry to see it completely.]

I hate when people don't use a cut to post their fics or arts. Don't they know how to use one? It's really easy these days. If you post more than one picture or a long drabble without a cut, I will never read or comment.

Funny thing is, most people who won't cut their entries post lame stuff.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Tumblr didn't let you use the cut if you post pictures.

Switch to HTML mode and type in [[MORE]] where you want the cut. Presto, you're set.

Agreeeeeeed. Only one person follows this journal and I cut everything, even my weekly drabble collections.

I hate having to scrooooooll like a motherfucker to get past a post.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that is kind of a dick move and annoying.

I can't suggest anything on LJ to help with that, but on Tumblr if you have the XKit add-on, there's a feature that allows you to cut long posts. It's been a lifesaver for me. Of course, it doesn't help if you use the mobile version, but it's at least something.
