I want a puppy

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I found the dog I want at the animal shelter where I volunteer. She's perfect and awesome and in one week she will go up for adoption to the general public. I am not in a place where I can have a full-grown dog (she's going to be a huuuuuge dog but right now she's just a big puppy), but I am trying like hell to get a job and a place of my own. I want this dog. I'm going to be crushed if I don't get her. What do I do? :(

Well, is there someone in your life who is willing to say "If this dog outgrows your current living situation before you achieve a different living situation, I will take care of it until you achieve such a living situation"? If so, great. If not, don't. Let the dog go to a stable home.

You have to take care of yourself before you can take care of a pet.

You might be able to get an especially nice someone to hold on to the puppy until you can secure a job and home, but only if you can secure one in a reasonable amount of time and they'd be okay with it.

I know it hurts, but you need to think about what's best for her. What if she gets sick or hurt, and you can't afford veterinary care?

It doesn't sound like this is the best match - if you are not in a place where you can have a full grown dog then honestly you're not in a place for a puppy. Puppies grow crazy fast - especially the big breeds. And they chew and pee and poop on everything and need crazy amounts of space and attention and exercise.

Take care of yourself first, get the new place and the job and settled on your own and then look for a puppy. The right one will come along when you're ready.

Oh anon I sympathise completely. I also really want a dog and there's an older dog in the rescue up the road and he's EXACTLY WHAT I WANT IN A DOG (likes walks, good with children, good with small animals, nice size, kinda scary looking for security and also adorable and friendly) but I'm not in the situation to adopt him so I hope he goes to a good home
BUT I WANT HIM SO MUCH AND I CANT

Agreed, op. Pets are expensive. Whether it's a big dog or a big puppy, it'll need LOTS OF exercise, vet visits regularly; and generally a lot of care. It sounds like you're stressed and your home isn't the best place. You need to have a large backyard or a leash-free park fairly close.

Maybe you could look at a smaller dog? Sorry again :(

This is not a time you need to be yoking yourself to a large pet. No job, no quarters for a large pet, how are you going to afford to food for this going-to-be-large dog when she gets Large? And any stress and pressure you feel from your jobless state is just going to be worse for you if you have this large animal to take care of.

Maybe you should just stop pet shopping until you have that job and place where you can keep the pet of your choice? Otherwise, the pet is going to be enduring your unemployment right along with you.
