Anne McCaffrey - Crazy Fuck!

(Anonymous) 2013-09-14 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I'd never heard of Dragon riders Of Pern, but it ounded kinda cool, so off to TVTROPES I go...

And I quote "Anne McCaffrey had an infamous opinion that anal rape releases hormones that turn men permanently gay"

What the fuck?

I need some background on this, I think.

Ah yes, the Tent Peg Statement

I have no background to offer, just a lot of disgust and confusion. This can't be real... Right?

just google anne mccaffrey and tent peg, you'll get all you need to know

Also she's dead now, her son writes the series and not only is he a poor writer, he has weird ideas about girls

Kinda makes sense when his son is FTM.

I'm not trying to excuse the fuckery of that whole tent peg thing, but you've got to remember her age and generation. The whole "effeminate homosexuals" and "hormones" talk was a pretty common thought back in the day. It's offensive and ridiculous nowadays, but I think it's definitely a generational thing and I honestly don't think she meant offense. It's just one of those really stupid things people say and don't think about what they're saying or how it's insulting, you know?

Agreed. Those of us who live long enough will probably have incorrect opinions of our own to repent one day.

As amusing/offensive as the tent peg thing was, thing that gets to me more is the way people with mental disabilities are portrayed in the Pern novels (among other things).

Huh, really? I actually don't remember any mentally disabled characters in Pern at all, unless you count riders being traumatized by the deaths of their dragons.

I vaguely remember this one guy at the Harper Hall, his name started with a C I think? I can't remember it very well. Enough to think that it might be the source of ayrt's complaints, but my lingering vague impression is that it was unexceptional in the context of a functionally premodern culture. But obviously I don't remember very well, so feel free to correct me.
