I don't think Pacific Rim was all that great as a science fiction movie. Too much handwavium and unobtanium involved.

However, it was a great action movie, because unlike Bay, Del Toro knows how to write characters that are not stereotypical snark-delivery vehicles, and unlike Lucas, Del Toro apparently knows how to work with actors.
