That's fair.

I mean, the whole robots-and-monsters thing isn't remotely new, but something about the way all those parts came together did feel new.

That kind of makes me sad, actually, that having emotionally aware male characters and well-developed female characters with their own stories are new in the 21st century. :( But yes, that's the truth - the action sequences were great and all, but the reasons why people loved this movie were the characters and their stories. Far from perfect, obviously, but still ahead of the genre in general, and way, WAY ahead of the movies that came out this summer that Pacific Rim was competing against. (I'm looking at you, Star Trek Into Darkness!)
