Oh hon.

-White dude loses family member in tragic circumstances. Proceeds to work through his shit instead of moping about it for the rest of his life. Dude becomes the emotional support for a WOC. They are platonic friends with an intense emotional connection (what? they can just be friends? not possible!.
-Black male adopted father figure, authority figure, saviour, etc .
-The 'nerd' people getting credit for help saving the world along with the macho robot pilots. At least 1 with a disability.
-Disaster movie where technology isn't demonized but actually the entire reason humanity had any chance whatsoever.

I could go on.

And let's not forget - main character with disability who isn't a) inspirationally disabled, b) killed by their disability, or c) miraculously cured of their disability.

No, I'm sorry, while I was watching that movie, I knew exactly what the characters were going to do and how they were going to react to everything. It felt like I had seen them in several movies already. And their skin colors? White male main character is nothing new. I've also seen white male characters move on after losing family before. Black authority figures are pretty common. For example, I've been seeing black presidents in movies for years. It's nice, but it's not innovative. Hot Asian chick is nothing new either. In fact, lots of male anime fans fantasise about getting an Asian girlfriend, and since Pacific Rim is inspired by mecha anime, I would have been more surpriesed if the leading female was white. And they kissed at the end, didn't they? Or were they interrupted? It was completely obvious that they were falling in love/already in love. I would have been happy if they'd just been friends, because that would have been different, but that was not a friendship ending.

And please don't even mention the 'nerd' people. The way they were turned into some really awkward, really bad comic relief actually offended me. Oh, look at the funny nerds, they're so silly and awkward, ha ha ha ha no. But if you think it's okay that nerds are always the comic relief, good for you or something. Enjoy your stereotypes.
