A lot of people call it innovative due to it's characters not being completely cookie cutter and the fact that we had a PoC adoptive Parent/Child relationship.

The story itself may be very generic and cliche, but the Geeks/Nerds weren't made fun of, in anyway, and were taken seriously, what I mentioned above, the main story revolved around Mako's past instead of Raleigh, and Raleigh himself wasn't like most main white guys. He had done his growing up. It was Mako's turn.
