(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like people are really missing the point of the show.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It's fandom and there's a white male character. Of course people are missing the point.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
A CIS white HETERO male. That's even worse.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Stupid breeders.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
All the cis scum should be gassed.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they're all demon scum. /sarcasm

I don't think this show has "good people". It has people who have done terrible shit, and people who haven't done terrible shit yet.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I like that description. It's one of the reasons I like the show. You never know who will do what and it's not afraid to give everyone a turn at being some degree of the bad guy.

I don't know, I think Hank just hasn't pushed him far enough. Walt would find a reason to put Hank down if necessary, probably in a very similar way to when he put the hit out on Jesse. The entire time he was organizing Jesse's murder, he was going on about how Jesse's a good kid, practically family! He's just confused, you see. He's just not listening to reason.

Walt has crossed one line after another and he refuses to look at the consequences for his own actions. He lies so well that he fools even himself. That's even scarier to me than if he didn't have a shred of good in him. Walt is the monster who lives next door, the one who genuinely believes he's doing all the right things.

Secret 9 - Breaking Bad

[Picture is Hank Schrader and Walter White from the TV show "Breaking Bad". They're both white men with light skin wearing dark clothes in a desert. Walter has a mustache and short beard and is wearing eyeglasses. He is kind of glaring at Hank?]

I think Walt's refusal to hurt Hank shows that he is still a good person deep down.

I agree, hopefully the show will end with Walt qualifying for sainthood by playing peek-a-boo with Holly.

Ugh I hate to be the douchepickle that says "you're missing the point," but you're missing the point. Walt's not a good person. That's like saying Joseph Stalin was deep down a good person because- hey!- he never outright killed his own family.
My personal interpretation of Walt as a character is that everything he does is for selfish reasons, anyway, whether he realizes that or not. I mean, I think Walt's a fantastic character but I still think he's a pretty terrible person.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually Stalin beat up his wife and when his son was imprisoned he didn't do anything about it and the son ended up killing himself on an electric fence. I'm pretty sure if Junior was in such a position Walt wouldn't just stand around and let him die.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-15 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that was kind of the point. I mean, yeah, I guess he's never physically hurt Skyler, but he's put her through some really awful stuff. And while Jesse's not his son, you don't think Walt would be a little relieved if he offed himself now?

I think it shows that Walt haas drawn some arbitrary lines in the sand that as long as he doesn't cross he can sstill think of himself as a good person.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
LOL You don't get it, do you?

[identity profile] antialiasis.livejournal.com 2013-09-16 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Breaking Bad isn't about "good people" and "bad people". It's about monstrously flawed people. Walt does have things and people that he cares about, like Hank, against his strictest self-interest; he is also extremely manipulative, has frighteningly few qualms about murdering and using people to protect himself, and can rationalize basically anything. He's not a "good person", but he's not a flatly evil unfeeling monster either.

Yes that was the point of that scene. To show that Walt has not lost all of his humanity. If he had, we'd all just be rooting for him to die/be arrested.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-16 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I like this comment. Because even when one studies real-life people who do things that, by legal and ethical standards, qualify as fucked up shit, attachment (as in emotional attachment) is so important to keep in mind. It's frequently overlooked. Walt is a bad person who does terrible things for self-preservation and control, but that and still caring (or his own twisted version of care) for Hank, or Jesse, is not mutually exclusive. It makes sense for him as it does for many real-life psychopaths.

more ot, I really love Walt. <3

No. No. No.

I hate how a bad person doing one slightly good thing is interpreted as him "being good deep down". What does that even mean? "Being good deep down"? If a person is a bad person in every other aspect of their life, then they are a bad person. That's....kinda a big aspect of the show.

That's like a serial killer shooting an entire family, but leaving the dog alive. That doesn't make them "good deep down".
