That was me in middle school, but my school was so small that there weren't really any friends for me to make. Sometimes I wonder if I would have been closer to my classmates if I hadn't had my internet friends, but more likely I think I just would have had no friends at all.

I was in the opposite boat - my school was huge, and I think that made it hard to make friends because unless you were in sports or a lot of clubs, you really didn't see the same people more than once a day. If you didn't already have a built-in social group, meeting people was hard. So I guess fandom was my club; maybe I would've been pressed to join a school organization had I not had fandom, TBH there were a few I probably would've loved, but maybe I would've just been lonelier. :/
