Not OP, but my thoughts on orcs:

Orcs think of the group. They claim land and resources not for themselves, but for the benefit of the tribe. (Some stories have greedy orcs, but that's not all that common.)

Orcs are tenacious. They keep fighting against the hero even when he's clearly going to defeat them.

Orcs are loyal. They may fight for dominance, but in very few stories do they ever betray each other.

It's true that orcs aren't very smart, but when was the last time you saw an elf be smart? All they do is talk about how smart they are. It's true that orcs aren't compassionate outside the tribe, but when was the last time you saw an elf show compassion? All they do is talk about how compassionate they are. Orcs don't talk much, which in and of itself puts them miles ahead of elves.

(Also, since a lot of bad stories use orcish tribesmen in exactly the same way old stories used African tribesmen, there are a fair number of black people who've tried to "reclaim" orcs as a positive symbol of the black community. I agree with N.K. Jemisin that such isn't possible at this stage, but I can't fault them for trying.)

I've seen gnolls in a similar light. Pack/Clan is important. Tenacity. Wish they had more playable Gnoll characters.

I truly dislike people woobifying orcs like that.
