Yeah, that's true. I am definitely grateful to the internet for making participation by everyone so much simpler, though there were small local pockets of fandom here and there with local BBSes when I was in my late teens, before the internet really took off.

I think I just wish for an intersection between the two. Like I'm thinking of the weekly watch-along stuff that ONTD Star Trek did, and how fun it was watching all the people who hadn't seen TOS before flipping out over various things, and the similar weekly watch-along posts in the Tiger & Bunny fandom as new episodes were airing and we were ALL weighing in and wondering what the implications of such-and-such were... and it would have been so much fun to be right there spazzing out about Star Trek episodes upon first airing with everyone else. But it's true enough, "everyone else" would have to have had a way to be in touch.

And I don't intend to come back to fandom later, because I'm unlikely to leave. Most of my fandoms are at least ten years old by this point, and I'm still enjoying them. =)

Yeah, I understand what you're saying. I enjoy a fandom a lot more when there is a "fannish community" of personable, like-minded folks whose main reason for participating is to squee and discuss the show/manga/movie/whatever.
