i doubt there is much you can do, sorry, given his pride. anything you tell him will be taken as an attack on his person with that mindset and only make him dig in his heels even harder

good news is that if he ever learns humility he might go back and play them someday again

yeah, agree. I doubt there's anything that can be said. if he has some self-awareness of his actual abilities, you might encourage him to play by himself/without an audience and see if that goes somewhere. if not, I'd just throw my hands up and walk away.
