I was confused for a moment, thinking "but Cecil/Carlos IS canon", before realizing you meant their appearances. And I do agree that it'd be kind of disappointing to have a specific appearance set in stone.

I have seen people do graphics based off shippy quotes between them, though, if anything Cecil/Carlos won I'd hope it'd be something like that...? (But I'd really hope for something altogether different.)

there are enough people that headcanon cecil as different races that they'd throw a shitfit just because of the skin color he was given (or potentially carlos not being ~dark enough~. seriously. they do that.)

I kinda had this thought too. It's not that they'll be officially endorsing one image of the characters, the creators seem to love leaving it open to the fans' imaginations, but I feel like if you saw somebody wearing the shirt before you ever listened to the podcast you would be more limited to picturing them that way.

Secret 3 - Welcome To Night Vale

I hate all of the Night Vale shirt contest submissions that have Carlos and Cecil on them, because if one wins it'll be like the creators are endorsing someone's headcanon as canon.

I know it's petty as hell, but I feel like the listeners' individual interpretations are part of what make it so special.

This is the exact reason why my favorite shirt design is this one. It represents them perfectly without destroying any headcanons.

Though seriously OP? I doubt you have to worry. The writers don't seem too keen on describing Cecil at all.

I'm not overtly fond of some of the headcanons I've seen and there's SO many in the first place that it seems like it would be simpler and more true to the source material to not go that direction with the merchandise.

That one is awesome! I love the use of colours and the beaker and microphone. I saw a really lovely t-shirt design that was of the town, but I can't find it :/

And I swear if I see one more tall thin Cecil... the BARE MINIMUM of descriptions they had to go on was that he's not that. Why does it keep happening except that artists are desperate for him to be hot?

I think part of it is that people will imitate the Cecils in the art they really like or find funny, and if that happens to be a skinny Cecil, they just go along with it without thinking :/

There should be more bald Cecils. And I don't mean "head cleanly shaven to look sexy" Cecils. I mean a damn receeded hairline with hair around the bottom because those are linked to different hormones than the top of the head. You know, like the real Cecil has. But no, everyone gives him a lush head of hair.

I do love me some generic blond-haired tattooed tall skinny Cecil, but yes! For this exact reason, this is one of my favorite Cecils (with bonus Kevin). (Also this adorable picture with bonus Carlos.)

Last I knew they were running two T-shirt design contests, one that's general and one that's specifically *for* Cecil/Carlos. So it's not like you can get upset that people are drawing Cecil to enter a contest about drawing Cecil....

That said, I think I'd be happier if the winner is one of the ones with a less specific Cecil-appearance, too. (Like the one where their features are blocked out Utena-style, or where he's only shown from the smile down. ETA: or the microphone/Erlenmeyer-flask combo linked above!)

I personally don't like the character-depiction designs because I prefer my t-shirts to have more abstract or subtle designs and probably wouldn't buy one with a drawing of two dudes on it.

I think all the designs are gorgeous, but yeah I see your point. I think it would be better if at least Cecil's appearance stayed entirely unconfirmed. Carlos we know has dark skin, perfect lush glorious black hair, great teeth, wears a lab coat, and is sexy, but Cecil should stay a mystery.

My favourite one that I saw had a bunch of quotes of Cecil talking about Carlos in a cool font made into a nice design and I really hope something like that wins.

I saw a description of one that was just two hands - one dark hand (for Carlos), one hand made out of Cecil's quotes about him, and a heart in between. Not sure if it actually got made, but I loved the idea (and actually fits with MY headcanon that Cecil is basically the anthropomorphic personification of the Voice of Night Vale...).
