That can depend on how it's criticized though. I don't care if some one doesn't like favorite show/book/movie, OTP, whatever... but if they go on and on about how terrible it is and "anyone that likes it is an idiot/stupid/crazy/etc"? Dude, dislike things all you want, but do not attack anyone who likes it. Like you said, even if I identify a lot with something I love, it's not all of me. So yes if some one attacks it in that way I'll be defensive.

I still don't get it. Because I know who I am, and what I am is not one of my interests.

So unless someone comes up and personally says to me "You are an idiot for liking [x]", I'm not going to take it as a personal issue.

Because putting judgement on an entire fandom filled with tons of different personalities does not mean they are targeting me as a specific individual.
The interest is not the sum of my experiences and my general personality and the other things that ACTUALLY make up who I am as a person.

Well, people do say stuff like "anyone who likes [x] is an idiot". And I know you're saying that isn't targeting you, but it's really easy to make that jump, and in a lot of ways harder not to make that jump than to make it. I'm not saying that you're immediately going to go into full-on bullshit trolling flaming Internet wank mode, but to at least get a little angry or hurt or take it a little personally? I think that's totally natural.

Or, like, if there's a relationship in a fictional thing, and one of the characters is someone you identify with, and someone says, "No one could ever love someone like X, it's totally unbelievable", or "Anyone who is like X is a horrible person", or "X is just a coward", or whatever, that could get you fired up.
