like it or not, what you love IS part of you. you love things for a reason. when those things are attacked, it's okay to feel hurt by it. now how you REACT to that hurt? that's where the problem comes in. because you can be hurt but not attack back, ideally. but i totally get why some people, especially very young people, do exactly that.

Part.
Exactly.
A small part.
But if you took Mass Effect or Metroid or Sailor Moon away from me, I would still be me at the end of the day. It would not erase my experiences, who I am in general, and the relationships that I have.

I just don't even really understand the concept of feeling hurt by it.
I mean, if someone attacks my lifestyle or my relationships, that's one thing.
An interest is another.

Some people tend to just get a lot more emotionally invested in fandom than others. Due to the negative feedback loop nature of fandom - something which has been exacerbated in recent years in large part due to Tumblr, though it's been around for a long time - there is an expectation among a lot of people for over-investment to be the standard or default. Whether this is because the majority of fans actually are over-invested or whether the ones who are just happen to be the loudest, I don't really know.

*shrugs* From the personal stand point, I don't get it either. I only tend to understand it from the distant, academic standpoint I use to understand any emotional issues in RL. I have plenty of theories on why it is some people do get so emotionally over-invested to the point of nonsensical fandom wank we see over stupid things like shipping, but I can't really say any of them here without either a thorough essay on the subject or sounding like an ass, so I won't go into them in detail here unless you're interested enough to put up with an essay on it.

I will add, however, that in this instance, fandom wank - as in wank over characters, shipping, etc - tends to be a separate issue from social justice related wank, which people tend to get up in arms over because it has real world implications, however distant those implications or that impact may be. Whether Character A ends up with B or C has little relevance in the real world, but whether or not A is depicted in a racist or sexist manner can have real world implications in the form of perpetuating an already racist or sexist culture. Seeing as people have experienced things like racism or sexism in real life, they tend to get emotionally invested far more easily and quickly in these issues in fandom.
