I don't think rabies was ever mentioned in any course I had at school. Which doesn't make this secret any less ridiculous; it's just a data point.

So nobody ever told you why you shouldn't pick up cute baby raccoons or pet strange dogs? That's...odd.

It's not mentioned in Australian schools because rabies isn't extant here. One of the reasons quarantine is as strict as it is is to keep things like rabies out.
