I agree. At least that's what I feel. My friend is very invested in fandom, and she made some real life friends from it, but she spends all her time around books and tv. It's fun being in fandom with her. However I think everything in moderation - isn't it better to have a full life and participate in fandom as a nice hobby?
My other friend who become unemployed is suddenly very interested in football and spends a lot of time on footy forum - which is like being in fandom. Football is there to fill the void.
I guess, what I'm trying to say is that I wish someday I'll be interested in my own life as much as in some character's life.

Fandom is a wonderful place to find likewise minded people, though.
