When do the Vampire Chronicles start being awful?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-17 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm interested in this series, but I've heard the later books suck (pun not intended). Where does the suckage begin?

Queen of the Damned.

The wheels fell off in that book.

lol, I used to like that one, though I've not picked it up in 10 years. I liked the structure of it - the way everyone gradually came together. Plus I liked the twins and Jesse a lot.

Everything after that is pretty bad though.

Can't be as bad as Anita Blake.

Hey, my first couple books were neat! I know how to make this better!

Sex scenes so frequent and pointless that I'm noticeably reusing phrases!

Werepanthers!

Werepanthers everywhere!

Especially Anita's vagina

This is why I love your posts, Chardmonster! Succinctly put.

Just one addition:
Not just werepanthers though... every possible were creature in the universe and Anita contains them all. She has all the strains because she's HAD all the strains.

A lot of people say Memnoch the Devil but I remember liking it for the most part; and I loved The Vampire Armand. It becomes VERY different as a series once you get past the second book though.
It's also been probably 10 years since I've read them, so take this with a grain of salt.

Memnoch the Devil was always one of my favourites (Tale of the Body Thief being my other), but I just couldn't find interest in anything AFTER MtD, so me it fell apart after it.

I think this is a subjective question though, since most people have different favourite books from the series.

I don't know the answer to this, because I've only read up through Queen of the Damned. (Which I like a lot BTW, although some people say that's where it gets worse.) But I actually wanted to ask a similar question, because I want to read the rest of them but I'm worried if I should because I've heard a lot of negative stuff about the later books. So does anyone have any advice about what I should expect?

Pretty much right away with The Vampire Lestat because it turns into all Lestat, all the time. I didn't think that Queen of the Damned was that bad, especially not compared to the suckholes that were The Tale of the Body Thief and Memnoch the Devil, in which Lestat has long, navel-gazing conversations with the devil and God. The sheer amount of eye rolling self absorption in this series is just... wow.
