Heh, I don't write many characters as being good at math because, well...for one thing, I see that symbol and the first thing that came to my mind was "Awesome! A secret about music!" because that's the shape of a modern string instrument's f-hole...

Yeah, yeah, I know, fail :D.

There is a real part of an instrument called an f-hole? That sounds so dirty. @_@

lol I've been around the term for so long it doesn't even register as dirty to me. It's just the hole in the soundboard.

It's also a cartography symbol meaning distance is approximate. I kinda figured it wasn't about that but I hoped anyways :)

Or even a long s. Such a versatile symbol :p.

I saw it and thought "forte" so music as well hahah. And I can't even read sheet music anymore so idk.

There's one character I write who I headcanon as being very very good with math (sums, in her head) and another I headcanon as being unable to grasp the basics (being an adult before learning anything concrete plays into that though). However things like literacy play in as well re: can a character read and write? It depends on the fandom a lot. But my main fandom is medieval fantasy shit so it's anyone's guess.

In something more modern, I feel like I could be a little more detailed about those things, but in my fandom most characters are never going to need/use/understand past basic algebra ANYWAY and algebra itself would constitute "math" with long division/multiplication being "basic math" soo...

It does depend on the setting, certainly. As other commenters have said though, and as with any specific trait or knowledge we could mention, as long as it makes sense for the character then you're probably okay. :}.
