WHAT DO YOU DO, STUDENTS OF FS?

Flashcards?
Record lectures on your phone?
Sleep with text under your pillow?
Sacrifice livestock to the god of Scantron?

I'm a highly visual learner. It's been a good while since I actually had to write an essay or study for an exam, but my main technique was re-reading and re-writing out my notes, highlighting key pieces of information, making mind maps and completing past exam papers for practise.

Devour the knowledge raw from the pages.

Flashcards also are acceptable.

Do the papercuts on your tongue help you to absorb the information?

Read the book, my notes, and past quizzes, and if it's foreign language look at the practices we've done
I mean you can do that for math and science too

Flashcards saved my ass for Chemistry. Forced memorization till that shit sticks.

Yes.

...to the first two. I also read the stuff straight from the book right before the test.

Um... study groups really helped with ASL. And if you can turn something into a game you're golden.

Take online classes (That are not programming) that have untimed or retakeable quizzes on line and simultaneously look for the answers online.
Memorization just has me barely scraping by with a grade (See: Biology, Economics)

I always remembered things best when I heard it as a lecture and then wrote down very detailed notes during the lecture and reviewed them later. Not everyone learns the same way, though. (In fact, I hear a lot of people insist lectures are a bad way to learn, which is one reason I am glad I am done with school because if everyone had up and decided to stop lecturing, I would have been screwed. It always took a lot of effort to get anything from a textbook to stick in my head.)

Before a test, I'd make flashcards of anything that was on the study guide or that seemed like an important point in my lecture notes or the reading materials. If I was given sample essay questions, I'd at least make an outline of the hypothetical essay I would write in answer. If there was going to be a discussion I'd be expected to participate in, I'd make sure I did the assigned reading and wrote down a few ideas of things to discuss.

I <3 flashcards. for my korean class, I use those in addition to a whiteboard so I can learn reading/recognition along with writing.

Last minute cramming *wince*

Seriously though? Going over important definitions and concepts, formulae, etc. before class and at the end of the day, doing homework regularly and making sure I'm on top of my classes in general are what I'm striving for.

And I'm totally procrastinating right now.

Most of what I did was math-y (math itself, physics, astronomy), so lots of practice questions. Lots and lots. Looking at equation proofs. Looking at my notes which are usually kinda messy, and re-writing them all neat (and more understandable). Uh.. highlighting and connecting key points, I guess.

Take good notes and rewrite them later. Where applicable, do all possible practice problems several times. :)

this is what worked for me too

remember, op, that not everyone learns the same way! flashcards, questions practice with buddies, group study, talking out loud and highlighting did nothing for me

nothing

I...usually don't have much I need to study for? Outside of math I usually just give the places I feel I'm weak a five minute glance over and I'm good. Math-wise I do a practice worksheet or two and done.

Re: STUDY SKILLS

(Anonymous) 2013-09-18 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a physics and english lit student (I know) so for physics and math it's all about the practice questions in the book and redoing the assignment questions without checking answers until I think I've fully gotten the grasp of it. I do as much as I can in the time I have.

For english I just reread and reread. Notes matter to a degree. But if I just show up to class I'm almost guaranteed to remember the most basic info I need so the good stuff is really in the text.

I'm the person that everyone in my class hates: I don't study and I get A's and the occasional B.

I realize this is incredibly arrogant, but a) "if I read it, I remember it" is a real thing for me, and b) I've promised myself that if this method starts to fail me, I will crack down and learn some real study habits.

Gonna get the results for my first test tomorrow.... we'll see how this goes.

I highlight the important things I have to study or write them down in simple, summarized sentences so I can remember the essentials.

Studying everything a book/lecture has to offer becomes easier once I can understand and memorize the basics...

...then again I'm a Med student so I'm forced to summarize or die from overload of information. D:

IT'S PROBABLY NOT YOUR CASE THOUGH. GOOD LUCK! <3
